Evaluation Question 3

Foundation Production- Evaluation

Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Our production company is called SceneScreen Productions. We chose this name by combining media terminology and researching previous production names. The logo was designed to look like a clapperboard with my production company name in the center of it. I chose this design as it relates to the film industry and fits into the assignment we were given. The inspiration for our logo design was from ‘DreamWorks’ this is because they have a night sky behind their logo.  Another inspiration for our logo was ‘Lionsgate’. Lionsgate was also our chosen distributor so it helped that our inspiration for our logo came from them as well. Lionsgate make thriller films like these and they mainly specify in this genre. Lionsgate was a suitable institution to produce our thriller film because the company specialises in making most thriller films such as The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, Texas Chainsaw 3D and Kick-Ass and they have a very similar target audience which is typically a young range of people aged between 15 and 30.  Lionsgate work within the thriller genre and have created some fantastic films. Lionsgate are a trusted and well known company, that are very successful and a very good inspiration for our group. Then we created an ident on iMovie to begin the start of the thriller opening to make it look more professional and to show an understanding in media technology and institutions. A production company distributes new films as and when they are ready to be viewed by an audience. Production companies will usually have specific focus genres that they will then invest into and provide budgeting, scripting and marketing so that film can be created for their target audience. A production company is either owned or under contract with a film studio or entertainment company that work in different genre types. Lionsgate for example focuses on thriller and action genres. DreamWorks usually focuses on animation along with Pixar. A production company also works closely with film distributors. Also a production company funds movie productions, casting and locations. A film distributor is a company or individual responsible for the marketing of a film. Therefore the production company would look to film distributors after they have made and produced a film. Film distributors would then advertise and market the film to draw in their target audience and invite them to watch the film. Our film distributor is Lionsgate. This is because we knew that they would be the best company to advertise our thriller as they are well known and a trustworthy company. Lionsgate also work with thriller films and have distributed many of them in the past. This was another thing that persuaded us to choose them to distribute our thriller.   Lionsgate Entertainment Corporation (or Lionsgate) is a Canadian-American entertainment company. The company was formed in, Vancouver British Colombia, on July 3, 1997, and is headquartered in Santa Monica, California. As of November 2013, it is the most commercially successful mini major film and television Distribution Company in North America and the seventh most profitable movie studio. Lionsgate is mainly involved in thriller, horror and adventure genres. They have distributed films such as 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire', Saw 3D (2010) and The Cabin in the Woods (2012)'. Lionsgate is a suitable institution to produce our thriller film because, the company specialises in making most thriller films and have a very similar target audience which is typically a young range of people aged between 15 and 30.  Lionsgate work within the thriller genre and have created some fantastic films. They are also an appropriate institution to produce our opening thriller because they understand the thriller genre and have distributed many thriller films in the past. Lionsgate also would be able to support and fund any future films we will decide to make. As Lionsgate are well know they will be able to intrigue an exciting audience to advertise our thriller and help to build a fan base for it as well.  The money to fund our opening could have been made through social media and cinema advertising. This would have helped to give our target audience an insight into what he would be expecting to see. Our distributor Lionsgate can contribute to our funding and help us to build an audience. By advertising our opening on YouTube we can raise funds by asking the public to support our film. These are some of the steps we can take to make sure our thriller can be advertised well.

Our titles reflect institutional practices because they are unique and different to any other title sequence we looked at. They are also very modern and current, keeping them up to date with the current trends. Various people are named in our thriller. I, Laura, Scott and Bailey are all included in the title sequence of our opening thriller. We were also all given individual roles as well as me, Scott and Laura being the main actors in our thriller. I was editor and producer of our thriller that is why I was named doing this role. Laura was costume and props designer and Scott was lighting and effects director. Finally Bailey was our director of cinematography of our thriller as he took the photos and the footage for our thriller. Russell Brower, Derek Duke, Matt Ulemen and Tracy Bush were the artists that we used for our soundtrack. The directors of specific roles in films are always used in the titles of a thriller film. The typical order for a film would be: director, screenplay, producer, executive producer, director of photography, production designer, editors, costume designer, visual effects, co-producers, music and casting. We looked into this and reflected this in our own thriller by adding in those roles in our titles. We used most of these roles some combined together so that we could make our thriller look as realistic as possible. Our film is similar to some Lionsgate films such as 'The Woman in Black' and 'Psycho'. This is due to 'Psycho's' one worded title its suspicious and sudden murder scene. Also 'The Woman in Black' has a distinctive setting and a mysterious narrative which combined with 'Psycho' creates our thriller and the content we have achieved by using those two films as inspiration. Both of these films have been released though social media and through advertising on television and radio. We are similar to Lionsgate as our production company focuses on specific genres like Lionsgate do and makes sure they understand what our target audience wants to see in terms of the conventions they expect to see in a thriller film. Lionsgate have recently acquired Summit Entertainment producers to distribute 'The Twilight Saga' and have acquired stakes for Sony Pictures Entertainment. This is something that SceneScreen Productions can look into doing in the future if we were to create and distribute more films and productions. This is why Lionsgate have been perfect institution to base our thriller on and to look to in future productions.
